The Facts:
The NFL is a copycat league and the Texans are emulating the best. New HC Bill O’Brien was an assistant, wide receivers coach, quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator with the Patriots between 2007-2011. During O’Brien’s three seasons calling plays in New England, the team ranked third, eighth and second in total offense. QB T.J. Yates said the Texans have been studying old Patriots film quite a bit in quarterback meetings. “Obviously watch a lot of Patriots film and seeing how they do it,” Yates said. “We’re trying to mimic them right now.”

Yates, who’s fighting for the starting quarterback job, says that it’s a great experience to be learning from what he calls “great football minds” in O’Brien and quarterback coach George Godsey. Adding it was easy to see early on how intelligent both men are when it comes to managing and creating an offensive scheme. O’Brien has been changing the tempo of practices in Houston since taking over. Speeding up at times how his new offense operates. Again, something he’s brought from his time with the Pats. “Our view of tempo has evolved especially those of us who were in New England,” O’Brien said. “We were a huddle team in New England and we were always a huddle team in New England. But then the last few years I was there we incorporated more no huddle and different tempos of no huddle.” Stay tuned.
