The Lions have officially signed Thompson, who was a tryout player during last week's voluntary minicamp.

Thompson becomes the fifth tight end on the roster, joining Brandon Pettigrew, Joseph Fauria, Michael Williams and Matt Veldman. Detroit carried three active tight ends last year. The 6-3, 245-pounder went undrafted last year out of Ohio, where he had eight catches for 95 yards and one touchdown as a senior. He finished his career with the odd stat line of 60 catches, 666 yards and six touchdowns.
