Ray Rice Gets The Franchise Tag As Expected
(3/2 11:19 PT)

The Facts:
Following up on the ongoing story. ...The Ravens made it official today, designating Rice as their franchise player. It comes at a cost of $7.7 million, but the Ravens still hope to sign Rice to a long-term deal. “As we have in the past, placing the franchise designation on a player allows us to keep negotiating on a long-term contract,” GM Ozzie Newsome said. “Our goal is to keep Ray Rice a Raven. We’ve done this with other outstanding players through our history, including Haloti Ngata a year ago.” Reported by the Carroll County Times

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Again, the move comes as no surprise. And whether a long-term deal is reached before the July 15 deadline or he plays for the franchise tender, Rice will be a Raven this fall. ... Rice rushed for a career-high 1,364 yards last season, leading the Ravens in receptions. He led the NFL with 2,068 total yards from scrimmage and set a Ravens franchise record with 16 touchdowns.
