As PFT suggested, the waiver priority is decided by record, so the 7-3 Bears have to hope a lot of other teams pass. The Chiefs could claim Orton. Even teams like the Colts, Dolphins, or Redskins could try to kick the tires on Orton down the stretch. That said, Denver Post staffer Mike Klis reports that Orton’s agent pushed for the release after they saw Jay Cutler needed surgery on his thumb. Orton reportedly has “let it be known” that the Bears are one of the teams he’d like to play for. It's possible the Bears could let Orton pass through waivers and sign him to a separate deal if he clears. Orton is due $2.58 million on the rest of his contract this year. The Chiefs, Redskins, and Colts seem like potential teams that could claim him, but Orton appears more likely to wind up in Chicago.
