The Facts:
Yet again, the Chargers trailing early took away chances for Mathews. In Norv Turner’s estimation, Mathews isn’t ready for crunch time, and Darren Sproles is. That’s why Mathews watched from the sideline the entire second half, finishing with the eight carries for 15 yards he had at halftime. Sproles, meanwhile, caught six passes for 53 yards in the game’s final six minutes.

“Please,” Turner said. “Darren has been playing that position for four years, and he knows exactly what he’s doing in protection. He knows exactly what he’s doing with the route. Obviously, when we get into those situations, it takes away the chances to use (Mathews) as a player. ...” Mathews made his second straight start and third of the season, yet carried fewer times and for fewer yards than in any game he has been healthy.
