Following up on the ongoing story. ... Benson has hired attorney David Cornwell, who also represented Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Cornwell released the following statement: "Though we adamantly dispute Cedric committed a crime, Cedric will continue to cooperate with law enforcement, Bengals and NFL."

Reading Cornwell's entire statement (as published on
Profootballtalk.com), it's clear the plan here is to use a self-defense defense. However, as PFT's Mike Florio suggests, the last paragraph of Cornwell's statement strongly implies, if not outright admits, that Benson failed to alert the Bengals or the league office of the incident before being arrested. Even if Benson believed he was a victim on May 30, he knew as of two weeks ago that an employee of the club in question claimed that Benson had punched him. Yet Benson apparently didn't tell the team or the league. And as Florio summed up, "This specific wrinkle won't make the situation any better for Benson; it can only make it worse.
