The Facts:
Following up on an ongoing story. ... Gates' smile told everyone his sore foot was all right. "Just taking precautionary action because of the struggles in the past and all the things I have been through," Gates said Friday at Chargers mini-camp. "It never was a major problem; it was something I wanted to make sure wasn't any worse."

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
As Times staffer Jay Paris noted, Gates shed his ankle/toe/foot ailments last year and -- even for him -- had an eye-opening season. After two years of playing with nagging injuries, Gates caught a team-high 79 passes for 1,157 yards and eight touchdowns. So, when news that Gates was visiting the same North Carolina foot specialist he saw for previous foot ailments came out, there was some concern. But Gates said he was being safe so he wouldn't be sorry later. Not only was he diagnosed with a slight case of plantar fasciitis, but it's his right, not left foot. "That was the one that compensated through everything the last couple of years,' said Gates, who will resume running in two to three weeks. ... Good news -- although his progress is still worth watching.
