Antonio Gates Getting Antsy; Wants Off PUP Soon
(8/15 9:55 PT)

The Facts:
Gates continues to rehabilitate the big toe he injured during last season's playoffs. He knows he needs to be pulled off the Physically Unable to Perform list before Aug. 30 to avoid missing the first six games of the regular season. Gates needs to pass a physical to be pulled from the PUP list. He made it clear that he has no intention of still being on the list when the Chargers open the regular season against Carolina on Sept. 7. "I refuse to be on that thing, man," Gates said. Reported by the North County Times

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Gates added: "I wouldn't imagine they would put me on it, based on the running I've been doing and the cutting I've been doing. ... I can feel some changes, but whether or not I can do it to the ability I need to (is the question). It looks OK, but the way it feels is the problem. ..." A problem for now. Even if he's not going to be ready for Week 1, we find the notion that team officials will shut Gates down for six weeks as unbelievable as the star tight end does.
