Giants Believe Odell Beckham Satisfies A Serious Need... For Speed
(5/9 10:42 PT)

The Facts:
Following up on a previous item. ... GM Jerry Reese couldn't stop calling Beckham "dynamic." The word kept coming up when Reese described the LSU receiver, the 12th overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft. One reason for the team's interest in Beckham was their desire to keep Victor Cruz in the slot. "[Eli Manning] needs a weapon on the outside, and Victor is more of an inside receiver," Reese said. "Victor can't play outside." Reported by the New York Daily News

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
While Cruz clearly can play outside, he's at his best as a slot weapon, catching short passes when defenses can't key on him. Given that, Daily News staffer Ebenezer Samuel expects Cruz to be back there on most downs in 2014, with Beckham and Rueben Randle manning the outside. Jerrell Jernigan could come in as the fourth guy, or the guy to give Cruz a blow, with Mario Manningham handling outside backup duties. From a fantasy football perspective, Beckham's 4.4 speed makes him noteworthy; Randle compared Beckham to DeSean Jackson, and while that may be an exaggeration, the fact is that Beckham can take the top off of a 'D'. That kind of speed holds safeties back, and makes life easier for the rest of the offense. And as we all know, New York's offense needs all the help it can get. We'll be watching for further indications that Beckham can provide the immediate help that Reese expects as we head into the summer.
