The Facts:
Mathews has a goal this year. A new teammate, he says, can help him reach it. ... Mathews had a tough end to an otherwise banner 2013 season. He rushed for a career-high 1,255 yards and appeared in all 16 regular-season games. An ankle injury, however, limited him down the stretch. In that last regard, he wants 2014 to be different, and for that, he said recently he "can't wait" to play with Donald Brown.

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
The public comments are Mathews' first about Brown since the former Colts running back
signed a three-year contract in March. Brown is expected to serve a complementary role to Mathews and Danny Woodhead, the latter of whom also is coming off a career year. Mathews and Woodhead are also both entering a contract season. Together, for at least one year, the three form one of the league's deepest backfields. ... Mathews, meanwhile, looks to build on his first 16-game NFL season and part of that is welcoming Brown in San Diego. "It's going to be awesome," Mathews said of the addition. "I know he's going to fit right in. We're a fun group of guys. He's going to fit in the team well. I met him, I think, the second day when we got him. I went up to the coach's office and met him. He's a nice guy, straightforward. It's going to be fun playing with him. This gives a little more diversity and another weapon. ..." We'll go ahead and remind fantasy football owners that the Chargers are adamant that
Mathews remains the primary back. If so, look for another solid year.
