Steve Breaston Ready To Step Up If Needed
(5/2 3:57 PT)

The Facts:
In Breaston's five NFL seasons, he's been cursed - or perhaps blessed - to play with some of the NFL's top wide receivers. In Arizona, they were Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. After coming to the Chiefs last season, it was Dwayne Bowe. Either way, Breaston played the role of sidekick, and he almost always played it well. Breaston may have to take the lead this year for the Chiefs. Bowe, as the franchise player, is unsigned and not with the Chiefs as they go through their offseason conditioning program.  Reported by the Kansas City Star

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Bowe has plenty of time to sign a contract and rejoin the Chiefs, but until he does, Star staffer Adam Teicher points out there's a chance Bowe won't play next season. If he doesn't, Breaston becomes the No. 1 wide receiver. Somebody has to be the receiver Matt Cassel looks to most often if Bowe doesn't play. Without Bowe, Breaston is the most logical candidate. The Chiefs' only other experienced receivers are Jonathan Baldwin, drafted last year in the first round, and Terrance Copper, who is mainly a special-teams player. The Chiefs also drafted Devon Wylie and Junior Hemingway. The Chiefs hope Baldwin can eventually become a go-to receiver, but his development was slowed last year when he missed the entire preseason and the first five games because of a broken thumb. ... Stay tuned. It's early. Bowe seems likely to sign -- but we'll be watching closely.
