The Facts:
The Bears on Friday promoted veteran offensive line coach Mike Tice to offensive coordinator. He replaces Mike Martz, who parted ways with the organization Tuesday after two seasons.
Tice is entering his 30th NFL season (14 as a player and 16 as a coach). Prior to joining the Bears in 2010, he was an offensive assistant with the Vikings from 1996-2001 before serving as Minnesota’s head coach from 2001-05. He then spent the next four seasons as a position coach and assistant head coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Tice, who interviewed for the position with coach Lovie Smith on Thursday, will call the plays and continue to work in a hands-on manner with the offensive line much like defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli does with the defensive line. The Bears will hire a new offensive line coach as well as a quarterbacks coach to replace Shane Day and assistant with the passing game.
