Crabtree was among the notable arrivals in the South Bay Monday morning as an Alex Smith-organized, players-only minicamp got under way. Other attendees included: Anthony Dixon, Ted Ginn Jr., Dominque Ziegler, Vernon Davis and Colin Kaepernick.

Players did not immediately take the field. The first item on the agenda was a classroom session -- one likely led by Smith, who despite not having a contract is taking a leading role in the sessions. ... Crabtree, meanwhile, had been absent at other 49ers players-only practices despite reportedly being in the Bay area. His failure to join teammates previously generated considerable chatter in the Bay Area media. His arrival today is a positive sign.
