The Facts:
We keep reading that Smith is still a longshot to sign with the 49ers despite HC Jim Harbaugh’s recent flattering comments. The theory is that bringing Smith back would only be out of desperation. And then Harbaugh opens his mouth again and we begin to wonder. “Some people say Alex Smith needs a fresh start — needs a new place to be or whatever. I say let that place be here,” Harbaugh said Friday.

It is wise for Harbaugh to speak highly of Smith as it makes the 49ers appear less desperate to trade for a veteran and local observers do believe the 49ers and Smith are keeping all options open at this point. But as PFT's Gregg Rosenthal suggests, this has gone beyond just covering all your bases. Harbaugh is recruiting Smith to return to the 49ers. “Well, I like Alex,” Harbaugh said. “And I like being around him and I like what I see on tape. ..." Stay tuned. Fans might not agree, but Harbaugh is calling the shots.
