The San Diego Chargers and Mathews , their first-round draft pick, agreed to a five-year contract Sunday, sources told ESPN.com's John Clayton and Bill Williamson. Reported by ESPN.com

Mathews, considered San Diego's heir apparent to LaDainian Tomlinson, is expected to share carries with Darren Sproles in the Chargers' backfield this season with Mathews playing the lead role.
