Smith suffered a shoulder injury in a non-padded practice Monday night, and while X-rays were negative, his status for the preseason is in doubt.

Team officials offered few specifics, but a source with knowledge of the situation told Herald staffer Darin Gantt that Smith was in considerable pain, and was considering whether to go back to Charlotte for an MRI. The source said it would be a surprise to see Smith during the preseason, based on the early indications. If he's out any amount of time, the Panthers would likely go with Muhsin Muhammad and Dwayne Jarrett as starters, with Ryne Robinson, Jason Carter and Kenny Moore in reserve.
