The Facts:
With Antonio Gates sidelined because of off-season toe surgery, the Chargers gave Chandler a heavy workload during their off-season coaching sessions. They need him prepared in case Gates isn't recovered by the start of the season. "Obviously, it's not good for us to have Antonio on the sidelines," Chandler said recently. "For me personally, it's a good opportunity to get a lot of reps and to really improve."

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
According to the Times, Chandler is betting that Gates will be ready when the regular season begins Sept. 7, but he is preparing as if Gates won't be recovered. Training camp begins in just five weeks and Chandler will likely be receiving first-string practice repetitions once it commences. He will arrive in camp preparing to be the team's opening-game tight end. "I think Gates is going to be back and in there doing his thing," Chandler said. "But I want to be prepared if my time comes to be in there. ..." Sounds like a good plan.
