HC Dennis Allen said that Carr will enter training camp as the No. 2 quarterback behind Matt Schaub. He took second-team reps during the three-day mini-camp, though he made a fair share of rookie mistakes. “We’re trying to expedite his progression,” Allen said. “I like a lot of the things that I’ve seen out of Derek. He’s still got a long way to go, but I like the direction that he’s headed.”

While Carr has been impressive, CSNBayArea.com's Scott Bair reports that Schaub had a solid day throwing the football. He connected on several touchdowns, seemed to make consistently smart reads and ran the offense well. Still, if Schaub struggles, Carr will be standing by. Even veteran teammates see that. "Obviously, you want to see what he does when the pads come on, because that's what really matters," Maurice Jones-Drew told the San Francisco Chronicle, "but up to this point, he's done an amazing job and I know guys are feeling his presence. ..." Given Schaub's struggles in 2013, Carr should remain on your radar.
