The Texans have hired Wade Phillips as their defensive coordinator, a person with knowledge of the decision told Chronicle staffer John McClain.

Phillips, 63, spent much of the day at Reliant Stadium interviewing with HC Gary Kubiak and meeting with others in the organization, including owner Bob McNair and general manager Rick Smith. Smith will be Kubiak's third defensive coordinator in six years, following Richard Smith and Frank Bush, both of whom were fired.
