The Chargers signed HC Norv Turner to a three-year contract extension Monday, extending his contract through the 2013 season. “In three seasons he’s led the team to three division titles,” said Chargers president Dean Spanos. “I’m confident that if we strengthen our roster and continue to provide Norv the assets he needs, this team will have continued success.”

Most observers believe it's likely the deal was done after the regular season ended and before Sunday's playoff loss to the Jets. Still, Profootballtalk.com's Mike Florio suggests the announcement creates an impression that Turner received additional job security in exchange for delivering yet another failure. The perception, however, doesn't match up with the reality. Turner has the top overall winning percentage in team history at .648 (35-19). The Chargers are 13-0 in December under Turner and 4-3 in January. His three playoff wins are tied for most in team history. The desire to keep him -- Sunday's loss notwithstanding -- is understandable.
