The Facts:
Gates has not yet signed his contract for the 2005 season, according to a team official, and cannot report to camp until he does so. An exclusive-rights free agent, the team originally tendered Gates a contract offer worth $380,000, but both parties had hoped to agree on a multi-year pact by now. Marty Schottenheimer denied any knowledge of Gates' contract status. "My understanding is he'll be here for the start of camp (today)," he said.

This doesn't seem to be an especially contentious situation. Even without a contract, Gates has been a regular at voluntary and mandatory offseason workouts. Stay tuned. ... We'll have more on this one as developments warrant.
