Quick Hits: Conference Championships

Seahawks VS Packers

The Seahawks gift wrapped and politely tried to give the game to the Packers several times. Instead of seizing the opportunity the Packers instead were also in a giving mood as 3rd string TE Brandon Bostick (who was somehow on the “hands” team) let the onside ball go right through his hands and bounce into the Seahawks hands. Russell Wilson & Marshawn Lynch marched the Seahawks down the field on the following drive and Lynch ran in for a TD. Then Luke Wilson caught a 2-Pt conversion to put them up by three. The Packers did tie it up and go to OT but the defense was deflated after playing pretty much the entirety of the second half.

Lynch ran the ball 25 times for 157 yards and a huge TD run in the 4th quarter. Wilson had a rough game throwing just one TD with four INTs but he did run for 25 yards and a TD and when the Seahawks needed him most he stepped up in the biggest way.

It was yet again the two WRs who most likely would be #3 or #4 WRs on most other NFL teams who helped the Seahawks in route to victory. Doug Baldwin & Jermain Kearse combined to catch seven passes for 141 yards and one TD. Baldwin was the main WR with six receptions for 106 yard but it was Kearse who caught the big TD.

Aaron Rodgers had a pretty awful game in his own standards throwing for just 178 yards with one TD and two INTs. Rodgers could not connect in the Red-Zone early on in the game when it seemed as if Wilson was trying to give them easy points and it ended up costing them in the long run.

Jordy Nelson & Randall Cobb proved that they can be threats even against the best defense in the NFL. The duo caught 12 passes for 133 yards and a TD.
The rookie WR Davante Adams was limited to just one catch for seven yards and was pretty much a non-factor all game.

It was the other rookie pass catcher in TE Richard Rodgers that had a big impact on the game as he was constantly catching big passes over the middle. Rodgers ended with four catches for 35 yards but you could really see the type of threat he is going to be as he matures.

Patriots VS Colts
The Colts really had no chance from the very start of the game as the Patriots walloped on them 45-7. Andrew Luck looked lost and never really got into a rhythm as his 126 yards passing and two INTs go to show he had an awful game.
The only played that actually turned in a decent performance on the Colts offense was RB Dan Heron who has continued to shine as the Colts have leaned on him more and more down the stretch of the season. Heron ran the ball 10 times for 51 yards and caught two passes for 11 yards. He was the only player that ever really got going.

Tom Brady plays better than any QB when it comes to the playoffs, especially when he gets to play at home. This week he dissected the Colts by throwing for 226 yards with three TDs to just one INT. Brady is a man amongst boys when it comes to the playoffs.

Welcome back to the playoffs in Boston Legarrette Blount. Blount ran all over the Colts running the ball 30 times for 148 yards and three TDs. The Patriots could not have asked for a better outcome from the RB who got axed from the Steelers midway through the season.

Robert Gronkowski is borderline unstoppable when he gets inside the Red-Zone. Gronk caught yet another TD this week as the Patriots dismantled the Colts.

Who I Like for the Super Bowl:
Two weeks ago I would have said the Seahawks in a heartbeat especially how well they have been playing as of late. Then they laid that big ole stinker at home against the Packers as the Patriots destroyed the Colts. I think the Patriots have just enough weapons to make this game interesting but in the end I think it is Tom Brady who wins yet another super bowl and leads the Patriots over the Seahawks by a FG.

A Look at the Recent Coaching Hires:

Gary Kubiak – Denver Broncos HC
I think this is a wise move if they plan on convincing Peyton Manning to play another season because they have a roster that is able to win the Super Bowl. Kubiak is a veteran coach and should earn the respect from a lot of the veteran’s players. This move seems more like a win now type move not a build for the future type of move. I like it if they can win the Super Bowl next season, if not I don’t think Kubiak is the right coach to build a new team with a new QB in the future.

John Fox – Chicago Bears HC
This is literally the same move as the Broncos made. They are in win now mode and I assume that they hired Fox to hopefully try and coach Jay Cutler back to his winning ways. Fox is not going to be able to teach and re-build with younger players as he doesn’t have the best track record with that. He is a winning football coach though and he has proven that although he doesn’t fair all that well in the playoffs.

Jack Del Rio – Oakland Raiders
This coaching pick makes sense to me. The Raiders have a good young QB in Derek Carr and they seem to be trending in the right direction. I think Del Rio can bring just enough veteran leadership and knowledge that he can make the Raiders turn around quick than expected.
Todd Bowels – New York Jets

The Jets have a loaded defense and Bowels is a defensive minded coach so I like the fit. I think if he hires an experienced OC to run the offense and drafts a new QB to build around that this could end up being a really great fit. Geno Smith & Mike Vick are not the answers at QB and it has been proven over the last season.

Rex Ryan – Buffalo Bills
This is another great fit in my eyes. The Bills have an amazing defense with not much to look forward to at the QB position. I think Ryan will bring the type of swagger missing in Buffalo to build some excitement around the team that is much needed. They need to draft or trade for a QB that can run a basic offense because they have the WR talent to work with. They also need a RB.
Jim Tomsula – San Francisco 49ers

This can really go either way for the 49ers. Sure Tomsula has been around the organization for quite some time but he also was just the Defensive Line coach. A lot of the veterans on the team respect him and like him as a person so this could work out if they plan to re-sign some of their veterans like Vernon Davis & Frank Gore. If the plan is to rebuild then I am not sure Tomsula is the man for the job especially with the fact that the GM for the 49ers seemingly doesn’t know what he is doing when it comes to hiring and firing coaches.
