Alex Smith Being Traded To Redskins; Cousins To Test Free Agency
As Kansas City Star staffer Terez Paylor first reported, Alex Smith has a new home, as sources tell Paylor the Chiefs have reached agreement to trade their veteran starter of the last five seasons to Washington. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport is reporting the same.

The trade can’t be completed until the first day of the new league year, which begins at 3 p.m. on March 14. But both Paylor and Rapoport say the deal is in place and will proceed -- which is also big news for Kirk Cousins, who will test the open market as an unrestricted free agent next month.

Reports indicate the Chiefs will receive Redskins cornerback Kendall Fuller and a 2018 third-round pick in exchange for Smith.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Smith gets a four-year, $94 million extension through 2022 with $71 million guaranteed.

Smith, 33, is coming off a stellar season in which he set career-highs in passing yards (4,042), touchdowns (26) and passer rating (104.7).

However, Smith was entering the final year of his contract with the Chiefs, and he has a cap number of $20.6 million for 2018. By trading him, the club stands to save $17 million.

The deal also clears the way for 2017 first-round draft pick Patrick Mahomes to become the Chiefs’ new starting quarterback. Mahomes’ regular-season NFL debut, a 27-24 win over the Denver Broncos on Dec. 31, was a success. Mahomes completed 22 of 35 passes for 284 yards with an interception in the game and showed poise while leading the Chiefs’ game-winning drive.

As for Cousins, in discussing possible scenarios going forward prior to this news coming out, the signal caller suggested if he does hit free agency, he wants a team that will not only offer him a lot of money but also offer him an opportunity to win a Super Bowl.

“Is money a part of it? Sure. Is it the only thing? No,” Cousins said on PFT Live.

Cousins continued: “It is about winning, and that’s what I want more than anything, so I’m going to be willing to make sacrifices or do what has to be done to make sure I’m in the best possible position to win, and that’s what the focus is going to be.”

We'll be following up on this story as the details and ramifications become clearer.
