About Face... One More Time: Favre To Sign With Vikings
According to WCCO-TV's Mark Rosen, a high-level source with the Vikings says quarterback Brett Favre is expected to sign with the team Tuesday.

Favre is on currently on his way to Minneapolis and is expected to sign with the team this afternoon, the source said.

According to Yahoo! Sports correspondent Jason Cole, a high-placed NFL source said Tuesday morning that Favre spent much of Monday calling to check on the details of what would be a one-year, $12 million deal.

ESPN insider Chris Mortensen, suggesting it will be a two-year contract worth between $10-12 million), is also reporting the deal is done assuming Favre passes his physical -- and that he doesn't have a sudden change of heart between now and the time they put the pen in his hand.

In case you somehow missed it, Favre, who I'll kindly suggest has "wavered" on whether to stay retired since making his initial announcement to leave the Packers in March 2008, has clearly struggled with the decision.

He was expected to join the Vikings at the start of training camp, but then told Vikings head coach Brad Childress that he wasn't interested in playing at that time. That's clearly changed.

Today's news comes a day after strong speculation by FOXSports insider Jay Glazer that Favre would join the Vikings later this year.

Nobody -- not even Glazer -- expected the move to come so soon.

As for the football angles. ... Favre isn't in Minnesota to be a backup. Assuming his surgically-repaired throwing shoulder is sound he provides the Vikings with an immediate upgrade at the position.

How long he holds up is another question.

Positives?

There are plenty. ... Favre will play more than half his games in a dome; he'll be working with one of (if not thebest) best running backs in the league in Adrian Peterson; he has a solid speed threat at wideout in Bernard Berrian and another versatile and dangerous weapon in rookie Percy Harvin; wideout Sidney Rice is a solid leaper capable of getting it done in the back corner of the end zone; and Visanthe Shiancoe is the kind of athletic receiving tight end Favre has relied on heavily in past seasons.

Oh yeah. ... and Favre is familiar enough with the offense with the offense to step right in and teach it if need be Also, current Vikings coordinator Darrell Bevell was Green Bay's quarterbacks coach at the end of Favre's run with the Packers and the two are close.

Bottom line?

If he can play as effectively this season as he did with the Jets in the first half of 2008, all the Vikings skill players become at least a little more threatening than they would have been with Sage Rosenfels or Tarvaris Jackson under center.

Speaking of Jackson, he could be the odd man out here.

According to Profootballtalk.com's Mike Florio, Jackson was in the dark on this one, and no decision has been made as to whether he'll request a trade or a release. The problem is that it will be hard for Jackson to establish a position on the depth chart with a new team given that training camp is over in many cities and winding down in the rest of them.

Stay tuned. I'll be back with more as developments warrant.
