Stallworth Detained In Fatal Accident; No Charges Yet Filed
Browns wide receiver Donte' Stallworth was detained by police Saturday morning after a car he was driving allegedly struck and killed a pedestrian. Detective Juan Sanchez, a police spokesman, told reporters that Stallworth was being questioned in connection with the accident.

Stallworth, 28, had not been charged.

In fact, Sanchez told reporters that Stallworth may not be charged for several days under Florida law procedure.

Stallworth’s bloodwork has been sent to a lab to determine if alcohol or any other substances were in his system -- a routine procedure after fatal accidents.

According to Sanchez, Stallworth “has been cooperative with the investigation.”

The mishap occurred at 7:17 a.m. and backed up traffic for several hours, according to the Miami Herald.

Witnesses told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that the victim worked at a nearby shipping company as an overnight crane operator. They said the man had just finished his shift and was crossing the street to catch a bus when he was killed.

Stallworth has played seven seasons in the NFL with stints in Cleveland, New England, Philadelphia and New Orleans. The Saints originally drafted him in the first round in 2002.

Stallworth signed a seven-year, $35 million contract with the Browns as a free agent before last season but hardly played because he was hurt.

He was due a $4.75 million signing bonus Friday. According to Cleveland Plain Dealer reporter Mary Kay Cabot, he is believed to have received that payment as scheduled.

Browns spokesman Bill Bonsiewicz was looking into the matter and told Cabot he would try to have some information soon.
