Kyle Trask 2023 Outlook
Trask was never going to win a QB competition against Tom Freaking Brady. But can he take down Baker Mayfield? The 2021 second-rounder will give it his best shot during a wide-open race to replace the retired legend in Tampa. "Yes, it's a competition. We don't have a starter right now," head coach Todd Bowles told The Rich Eisen Show in May. "We know Baker has played in games and Trask has not, but we've watched Trask over the years and we like some of the things he does, and we're going to give him the chance to play and compete and see who comes out." Trask only made one appearance in his first two seasons, completing 3-of-9 passes for 23 yards in Week 18 at Atlanta last season. At Florida, he finished fourth in the 2020 Heisman voting after averaging 356.9 passing yards per game with 43 touchdowns and eight interceptions. That included a 474-4-1 masterpiece to defeat Georgia and a 408-3-0 effort against Alabama in the SEC championship.
Kyle Trask 2021 Outlook
The Buccaneers found a potential heir to Tom Brady's throne in selecting Trask with the 64th overall pick in the 2021 draft. With Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Griffin as the veteran presence behind Brady, Tampa is in an enviable position to groom a signal-caller for the next few seasons. Trask started 22 games at Florida the past two years, including throwing for 4,283 yards while completing 68.9 percent of his passes with 43 touchdowns to just eight interceptions in 12 games in 2020. According to NFL.com, Trask owns a solid, if unspectacular, arm, great touch, accuracy and excellent timing on his ball. An intelligent passer, he showed the ability to read and react to defenses and run an offense. The knock on Trask is lack of mobility. He's purely a pocket passer. Given all that, Trask couldn't have asked for a better spot. He gets to lean behind Brady before potentially becoming a starter. At the very least, he could get a lengthy career as a backup. One concern? Will the coaching staff that had a role in this selection remain on board beyond Brady's tenure? It's a fair question to ask when considering Trask as a dynasty prospect. He might not be as ideal a fit for a different scheme.
