Dawson Knox 2023 Outlook
Knox went over 500 yards receiving each of the past two seasons and became a vital outlet on third down and in the red zone for Josh Allen. His value dipped on draft night, when the Bills moved up to select Dalton Kincaid, a tight end out of Utah with more athletic gifts and excellent hands. The addition puts Knox on notice and brings a risk assessment for fantasy owners that wasn’t a consideration in the past given Buffalo’s shortage of weapons behind Stefon Diggs. Knox has 15 touchdown catches since the start of the 2021 season and finished with six in ’22, tying Gabe Davis for No. 2 on the team with 48 receptions. There is a school of thought that Knox might not see a reduction in production for two reasons: The Bills are reining in Allen’s running, and Kincaid will be more of a slot receiver than tight end. Injuries have also been a factor for Knox, including a foot, back and hand injuries that limited his practice time in 2022.
Dawson Knox 2022 Outlook
Knox is coming off a breakout season in 2021 after taking a big step forward in his third NFL season. Where did Knox improve from 2020 to 2021? According to Pro Football Network, the most important area is target share. In 2020, Knox saw just a 9.7 percent target share, but that spiked to 13.2 percent in 2021. While it's still not a large percentage, it led to more volume as Josh Allen attempted 646 passes last season. The Bills will continue to be a pass-first offense, making a 13 percent target share valuable. Knox also improved his catch rate from 55 percent to 69 percent. This was less him and more Allen as Knox's catchable target rate went from 70.5 percent to 81.7 percent. In addition to volume, the biggest catalyst behind Knox's ascent in fantasy was touchdowns. After scoring five times over his first two seasons, Knox found the end zone nine times in 2021 alone. Knox scored a touchdown on 18.4 percent of his receptions, one of the highest rates in the league. So, that's likely not sustainable and the addition of O.J. Howard in free agency suggests more two-TE sets could be coming. Even still, Knox is part one of the league's best offenses with one of the league's best quarterbacks. Not a lot of tight ends can say that.
