Hayden Hurst 2022 Outlook
The Bengals signed Hurst to a one-year contract in a move to replace C.J. Uzomah, who left for the New York Jets. ... Hurst, a first-round pick out of South Carolina by the Baltimore Ravens in 2018, never became the star he was once predicted to be in Baltimore as he was soon overshadowed by Mark Andrews. He went to Atlanta in 2020 and caught 56 balls for 571 yards and six touchdowns as the Falcons' featured seam man in 2020. Unfortunately for his career, he then took a back seat to prodigy Kyle Pitts in 2021 and caught only 26 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games. As the Redzone.org suggested, the 28-year old Hurst is going to have space to operate in Cincinnati with Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins terrifying defenses on the outside. He should also see plenty of red-zone opportunities as teams bracket Chase near the goal line. It is great landing spot for someone who needed one to revive his fantasy career, but that doesn't mean you should invest significant draft capital here. Hurst is a streaming option at best until he proves otherwise.
Hayden Hurst 2021 Outlook
A new coaching staff undoubtedly will bring philosophical changes for the Falcons. Based on new HC Arthur Smith's past, Hurst is on the list of players who could see a leap in production. Under Smith, the Titans ran the ball the second-most of any team in the NFL, an approach that didn't allow for as wide of a distribution of passing targets as most other teams. When Tennessee did throw the ball, the tight ends were involved so Hunter’s skills have a chance to be utilized to their full potential. Former Titan Jonnu Smith finished the season with the third most yards on the roster, and Tennessee's other tight end, Anthony Firkser, ranked fourth with 39 catches for 387 yards. It's evident that the Falcons will look to return to a well-executed play-action attack, which the team hasn't shown since the 2016 season. Given the personnel at the present time, it's tough to assume the Falcons will run the ball as much, or as successfully, as the Titans did this past season. If the run game improves, however, play-action should as well. From there, a player such as Hurst, whose rapport with Matt Ryan improved by the week last season, should only see his targets and opportunities grow.
