Jamaal Williams 2020 Outlook
Last season, Williams did what he always does -- play in nearly every game and grind out tough yards. The fourth-year pro has played in 46 of a possible 48 games, never fumbled, is a terrific blocker and has caught 75.8 percent of the passes thrown his way. With the emergence of Aaron Jones as a Pro Bowl-level running back, though, Williams played a career-low 34 percent of the snaps. He made the most of the opportunities, however, averaging a career-best 4.3 yards per carry and catching a career-high 39 passes while setting a new personal-best with five receiving touchdowns. According to Forbes.com, Williams is the only player in franchise history to register 400-plus rushing yards and 200-plus receiving yards in each of his first three NFL seasons. He's tough, physical and remarkably consistent. And still, it could be tough for Williams to find carries in Green Bay's crowded backfield. Jones has become a star and will be the Packers' No. 1 back once again. Green Bay also used a second-round draft pick on bruising AJ Dillon, who's a bigger version of Williams. Williams is outstanding in pass protection, though, and has developed into an effective receiver out of the backfield. So, if he's on the roster, he'll have a role. Will it be fantasy relevant? That's debatable.
Jamaal Williams 2019 Outlook
Williams is a capable enough back, but he's mired in a less-than-ideal situation now that Aaron Jones appears to be locked in as the lead halfback for the Packers. Per CBSSports.com, playing in a dozen games with Jones last year, Williams averaged only 5.6 carries and 1.3 receptions per game. In four games without Jones, Williams was the featured guy, posting 13.5 carries and 3.0 catches per game -- but only one with 10-plus fantasy points. In other words, Williams needs a large workload by himself -- and the volume that goes with it -- to be even a marginal viable fantasy producer in what's been a pass-heavy Green Bay offense (something that seems likely to continue even with a change of coaching staff). All that said, considering Williams as a handcuff for Jones, who has struggled to remain on the field during his short career, is a fair approach. One concern? There are those who feel that Dexter Williams, a sixth-round pick in this year's draft, has even greater potential than Jamaal, a hard worker with strong blocking and receiving skills, who protects the ball. But Jamaal isn't the dynamic threat that Jones is and Dexter Williams can be. Our advice for redraft players? Watch the competition develop for the backup job this offseason, but don’t invest much capital on either player.
