Christian McCaffrey 2020 Outlook
Last year McCaffrey joined Marshall Faulk and Roger Craig as the only players to total 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in a season and is coming off back-to-back 100-plus catch campaigns. He's accumulated a whopping 303 receptions in three seasons and fantasy owners have been prime beneficiaries. Not only did he rank in the top 20 an amazing 15 weeks in 2019, but McCaffrey also scored 20-plus fantasy points 14 times. According to NFL.com, no other back accomplished that mark more than seven times. McCaffrey also led the position in games with 25-plus fantasy point performances with 11. Heading into 2020, McCaffrey is suddenly the face of the Panthers' franchise and a worthy one at that. Even with the changes in Carolina under new HC Matt Rhule, McCaffrey should remain the focal point. While McCaffrey's workload -- he led all players with 403 touches last year, and only Ezekiel Elliott (736) has more over the last two seasons than McCaffrey (729) -- is a concern, McCaffrey hasn't missed a game yet in his career. An unguardable talent, McCaffrey tilts the field in his favor whenever he touches the ball and can't be blanketed in space. Surpassing the 1,000/1,000 barrier another time, especially if he has to carry Carolina's offense once again, would not be a reach. Draft accordingly.
Christian McCaffrey 2019 Outlook
HC Ron Rivera and OC Norv Turner told us what was coming last August. Rivera said that he could envision McCaffrey getting 200 rushing attempts. Turner told us it was realistic to expect McCaffrey to average 25-30 touches per game. They weren't far off as McCaffrey finished with 343 touches (21.4 touches per game). McCaffrey started all 16 games last season and carried the ball 219 times for 1,098 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. He was equally as effective catching the ball. He managed to snag 107 receptions out of 124 targets for 867 yards and six touchdowns. He showed that he could be a high-end, dual-threat player. When the offense struggled, McCaffrey was there to pick up the pieces and keep them in games. Along the way, he joined Matt Forte and LaDainian Tomlinson as the only three players to ever rush for 1,000 yards and catch 100 passes in the same season. So, what are the odds the Panthers ask him to handle a similar workload again in 2019 despite talk about going easier on him? How about pretty darned good? Although Rivera told reporters in February the Panthers would like lighten McCaffrey's load, the Charlotte Observer believes the goal isn't fewer touches, just fewer extraneous snaps. Assuming they are on point, that will keep McCaffrey locked in as an early first-round fantasy pick.
Christian McCaffrey 2018 Outlook
Incoming OC Norv Turner believes there are wrinkles to iron out with a guy like McCaffrey. "He had an unbelievable rookie year and did a lot more than a lot of people would be asked to do and handled them all," Turner said. "That hard-nosed running between the tackles he can certainly do, but I don't know that's what you want to lead with him." Because McCaffrey was a top-10 pick, many were expecting an average higher than 3.7 yards per carry. As a receiver, though, he set a franchise rookie record with 80 catches while averaging a healthy 8.1 yards per reception. He also showed a nose for the end zone with eight total scores. After McCaffrey was drafted, some compared him to Darren Sproles, the multi-dimensional spark plug Turner coached in San Diego. While Sproles only saw 47 touches in 2007 (his first year working with Turner), from 2008 through 2012 he averaged 127 opportunities per season. "Christian is ahead of (where Sproles was), and there are some things we can do that he did, but Christian can run wide receiver routes," Turner said. If nothing else, expect Turner to continue to leverage McCaffrey's receiving skills going forward. Anything more will be gravy, especially with the addition of early-down back C.J. Anderson.
