Ezekiel Elliott 2020 Outlook
New HC Mike McCarthy doesn't have much of a history of rolling with a lead back from his time in Green Bay, but Elliott gives him a heck of a bell cow in Dallas. McCarthy discussed the exciting possibilities of running the read-option with Dak Prescott and Elliott -- something we've already seen in Dallas in past seasons -- but the more important part was about McCarthy's past beliefs in the need for multiple backs not affecting how he values a talent like Elliott. "As far as your playmakers, you've got five premier positions, obviously running back is one of them," McCarthy said. "You get the ball to your playmakers. Zeke will touch the football plenty in our offense." As NFL.com's recently noted, Elliott ranked second among backs in top-20 fantasy finishes (14) and games with 20-plus fantasy points (7) in 2019. And even given McCarthy's history of relying heavily on his quarterback, there's no reason to believe Zeke's workload will be diminishing noticeably. Even if the Cowboys' offensive line isn't the dominant force it once was, don't expect Elliott to slip outside of the top-5 come draft day.
Ezekiel Elliott 2019 Outlook
The Cowboys officially picked up their fifth-year option on Elliott in May, so he's now under contract through the 2020 season. Contract aside, we know what we're getting here: volume. In 2018, Elliott ran to his second rushing title in three seasons. And while there's a perception that he's a run-only back (Elliott notched 58 total receptions in his first two NFL seasons), that's really not the case. Indeed, beyond Elliott's value in the running game, where he gained 1,434 yards on 304 attempts, he added a whopping 77 receptions last year for another 567 yards. That's 381 touches, and 2,001 yards from scrimmage. His 77 catches last year put him in a tie for 22nd in the league with Odell Beckham Jr. There's significant fantasy value in that kind of dual-threat production; indeed, he accounted for over a third (36.3 percent) of the team's entire offensive output. So if he's going to take 380-plus touches, fantasy owners need to pay attention to that. On a more positive note, Elliott avoided league punishment following an altercation with a security guard in Las Vegas in May. Elliott's history with the personal conduct policy (six-game suspension in 2017) led to a meeting with NFL Commissioner Rodger Goodell and a written apology by Elliott the first week of July, but Goodell determined this incident did not violate league policy.
Ezekiel Elliott 2018 Outlook
Elliott entered Week 1 of 2017 with a six-game suspension looming over his head but filed multiple appeals that allowed him to play in Dallas' first eight games of the season. He would eventually serve the entirety of the suspension. Still, Elliott likely would have won the rushing title again if he had played all 16 games, rushing for 983 yards in 10 games. During his extended absence, Elliott’s importance to the Cowboys’ offense was apparent. As Bleacher Report noted, when Elliott was on the field, Dak Prescott had the play-action passing game rolling, and the offense worked as planned despite unexpected regression by the offensive line. So, while there are no clouds or off-field issues hanging over Elliott heading into this season, the offensive line still needs to rebound a bit, evidenced by the fact that Elliott’s rushing output dropped a full yard per carry in his second season. Assuming the blocking picks back up, Elliott is more than capable of maximizing his size and speed to return to the form we all saw during his rookie season. Even if his lighter usage as a receiver puts him behind other backs, the workload will still be sufficient to satisfy Elliott’s fantasy owners.
