Rob Gronkowski 2022 Outlook
No one, not even Gronkowski, seems certain whether Gronk will return for a 12th NFL season. The uncertainty prompted the Buccaneers to draft tight end Cade Otton at the top of the fourth round to join Cameron Brate on the depth chart, while still leaving the light on for Gronkowski. He reiterated to TMZ Sports in May that it's the Bucs or retirement. "It's just the Bucs," Gronkowski said. "Love that organization, man. Love the guys there. It's family over there. ..." Indeed, Gronk has worked out at the team facility this offseason despite being unsigned. In addition, he told the New York Post that it wouldn't take him long to be NFL-ready. "I feel like I can get ready at any time for football, like it'll take me two weeks only, so, I'm not really worried about it," Gronkowski said. "It's just cool just to be doing other things and enjoying them. ..." Tom Brady usually gets what Tom Brady wants, and the quarterback surely wants Gronkowski on his team for what could be a last run. ... With O.J. Howard moving on to Buffalo as a free agent, Brate is next man up if Gronk doesn't return. But if he's back, Gronkowski would move well inside the top 10 at his position.
Rob Gronkowski 2021 Outlook
Gronkowski is returning to the Bucs on a one-year deal worth $10 million. ... Gronkowski, who turned 32 in May, retired and didn't even play the 2019 season, perhaps to his benefit. In 2020, he started all 16 regular-season games for the first time since 2011. Gronkowski accounted for seven touchdowns in his first season with the Bucs, adding eight receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns in the postseason. In other words, he came on strong after a slow start -- not entirely surprising given the year away from the game. As SI.com noted, Gronkowski averaged four targets and five fantasy points over his first five games of the season. During that time, he scored more than eight points only once. In his next 10 games, Gronkowski averaged 5.3 targets and 11.8 fantasy points. During that time, he scored more than 13 fantasy points six times. Still, Gronkowski's 149 fantasy points in 2020 represent the second fewest in a single season when he's played in at least 11 games. His 623 yards were also the second fewest in a season where he played at least 11 games. With O.J. Howard expected back from the torn Achilles that sidelined him early last year, Gronk's role is unlikely to expand going forward.
