Darren Sproles 2017 Outlook
Sproles is 34 years old, and he is really beginning to feel the pull of family. Because of that, he has decided this season will be his last in the NFL. That was the thought when he inked a one-year extension through 2017 last summer with the Eagles, and it remains the thought as he completed his 12th season in the league after racking up 406 rushing yards (4.8 yards per carry), the second-highest total of his career. He had an additional 423 receiving yards on the season, found the end zone four times in all and remains a threat in the return game. The addition of LeGarrette Blount in free agency ensures Sproles will continue to play a complementary role -- one he's well-suited to handling. Checking in at just 5-foot-6 and 181 pounds, Sproles has gained league-wide respect for his accomplishments and approach to the game. Last season, he moved past LaDainian Tomlinson and into eighth place for career all-purpose yards (18,975). Steve Smith (19,146) and Marshall Faulk (19,190) are within sight.
Darren Sproles 2016 Outlook
Although he wasn't on hand for the start of OTAs amidst reports the Eagles were in interested in trading Sproles, all involved have denied the rumors. Sproles has been a significant offensive and special teams contributor since joining the Eagles back in 2014 after a trade with the Saints. He became a dangerous weapon in Chip Kelly's offense as both a running back and as a receiver, talents that earned him All-Pro honors and trips to the Pro Bowl in 2014 and 2015. Sproles was also one of the best returners in the league, leading the league in punt return touchdowns in 2014 and 2015. The Eagles hope that Sproles will continue his successful career in Philadelphia in new HC Doug Pederson's offense this season. With DeMarco Murray in Tennessee, Sproles and Ryan Mathews will be looked upon to carry the Eagles run game in 2016. Worth noting, rookie Wendell Smallwood, a fifth-round draft pick, possesses similar skill sets to Sproles in a much younger body. Still, fantasy owners should continue to view Sproles as a spot player -- an RB4 with upside in PPR formats and in leagues that award players for their return yardage.
