The Facts: Kupp told The Athletic on Thursday that he plans to be at the team’s minicamp next week, despite ongoing contract talks. His answer wasn’t surprising, considering Kupp has also been present for the Rams’ voluntary OTAs through May and early June. “I’m gonna be here,” he said, laughing. “Has anyone ever shown up for the voluntary, and then not shown up for the mandatory?”
Diehards Line:
Kupp has said this spring that he’s looking for a contract that’s “fair” -- not just for the team, but also for him after winning the NFL’s rare triple crown in 2021. Logically, that number could range around the $20 million-per-year mark, if not a little higher. Nine other receivers now make $20 million per year, and the top four contracts range from $24 million to $30 million per year. Kupp has two years left on his current deal. His cap number for 2022 is $18.675 million (with a $15.75 million average over the next two years), and his average annual salary in his current deal ranks No. 15 among current receivers. Kupp said Thursday that he’s in communication about the negotiation process and does like to be looped in, but not to the point of distraction. ... Meanwhile, the Rams are preparing for a second year of their evolved offense under Matthew Stafford, who isn’t throwing through the spring but who is able to participate in install and “ghost rep” work during drills. Being present to work through new concepts with Stafford was a goal of Kupp’s this spring.
