The Facts: The Buccaneers and Godwin did not reach a long-term deal today and he now will be tagged, officially, per source.
Diehards Line:
According to ESPN.com's Jenna Laine, it's possible that a deal for Godwin gets done in the next few days before legal tampering opens up on Monday. But no deal will be done before the 4 p.m. deadline today. Godwin led the team with 98 receptions for 1,103 yards (he also scored five touchdowns) this past season despite suffering a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee in December. Because the Bucs used the franchise tag on Godwin last year, they have to guarantee him 120 percent of his salary in 2022, or roughly $19.18 million, to apply the tag. HC Bruce Arians and GM Jason Licht have both made it clear that Godwin would be in their future plans even with a star-studded list of free agents that include DT Carlton Davis, TE Rob Gronkowski, RB Leonard Fournette, C Ryan Jensen, G Alex Cappa, DT Ndamukong Suh, DE William Gholston, LB Jason Pierre-Paul and S Jordan Whitehead. Again, Godwin is a priority. “It would be hard for me to imagine moving forward without Chris,” Licht said. ... Stay tuned.
