The Facts: Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones expressed frustration with Cooper during a Friday radio interview according to Jon Machota of The Athletic. “Amari Cooper should take half the field with him when he runs a route. A whole bunch of that defense ought to have to honor Cooper. He ought to be able to catch it in the middle when they’re going with him. Others do," Jones said. "You throw to people that are covered all the time.”
Diehards Line:
Jones was highly agitated during his weekly radio interview, criticizing himself and the Dallas coaching staff but stopping short of promising major changes. But he laid into Cooper, who in 2021 posted the second lowest yards per game (57.7) and second lowest yards per reception (12.7) of his NFL career. Cooper played second fiddle to CeeDee Lamb for much of the 2021 season, finishing second in target share (19 percent) and air yards share (26 percent). And it is true that he failed to top 1,000 yards receiving for the first time as a Cowboy, catching 68 passes for 865 yards and eight touchdowns in 15 games. Of course, Cooper is a problem. He isn't the only problem in Dallas. The Cowboys have plenty to work on this offseason.
