The Facts: The Giants' next executive leader is coming from the western side of New York. The Giants have hired Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen as their new GM, the team announced Friday. "We are pleased and proud to name Joe as our general manager," Giants president John Mara said in a statement released by the team. "Throughout our search, Joe impressed us with his ability to communicate a progressive and comprehensive vision for our team. His philosophy and collaborative approach to building a roster and coaching staff align with what we were looking for in a general manager."
Diehards Line:Schoen joins New York after spending the last five years as Bills GM Brandon Beane's right-hand man, assisting Beane with Buffalo's rapid turnaround into a Super Bowl contender. Schoen's first roster-related decision will undoubtedly focus on quarterback, but there are holes elsewhere that need to be addressed. Schoen will be armed with two top-10 picks in the spring's draft after New York acquired Chicago's 2022 first-rounder in a trade to move up to select Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. Of course, Schoen’s hiring is the first of two major moves the Giants had to make to kick off their offseason. The other one is to find a head coach who can work with Schoen to build a team that ends a streak of five straight losing seasons and wins a playoff game for the first time in more than a decade. "We will cast a wide net," Schoen said in a statement. "It can be former head coaches, first-time head coaches but, more importantly, it has to be a person who possesses the ability to lead an organization and the ability to motivate and develop players.” While Schoen is looking to cast a wide net, he won’t have to dig too deep for two candidates. Schoen comes to the Giants from the Bills and their offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier are on the interview lists for other teams looking for a coach right now. The Giants haven’t put in a request to speak to either, but it would come as no surprise if that’s part of the search process.
