The Facts: The Patriots are searching for a quarterback after their former leader Tom Brady won his seventh Super Bowl title Sunday night with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to The Athletic’s Jeff Howe, the Patriots are not serious suitors for Wentz as trade talks start to heat up. Wentz threw for 2,620 yards and 16 touchdowns last season before being benched, mostly due to his 15 interceptions.
Diehards Line:Reports over the weekend said the Eagles have requested a “Matthew Stafford type package,” which included two future first-round picks, a third-round pick, and former number one pick Jared Goff. Some teams have turned away because of this, but there are enough teams in the mix to believes that a trade will be coming soon. Just not New England. The MMQB’s Albert Breer reported that the Patriots only offered the Lions a second-round pick and an unknown player for Stafford. Whether the reports of Stafford not wanting to go to New England affected the trade offer is unknown at this point in time, but it probably reflects where the Patriots are at in terms of price point. Jameis Winston will be a free agent this offseason and while the Saints are interested in keeping him, ESPN.com’s Mike Reiss laid out the possibility of the Patriots getting into the sweepstakes for Winston. Raiders badckup Marcus Mariota has also been mentioned as being of interest to the Patriots. ... We'll continue watching for more.
