The Facts: Everyone knows what Murray can do with his legs. When the Cardinals rookie quarterback pulls the ball down and decides to run, he’s so fast you almost expect to see a cloud of smoke suddenly emerge around his feet. But what about Murray’s arm? According to his head coach and several of his teammates, Murray’s arm talent reminds them of another young NFL quarterback who just happened to tear up the league last season: Patrick Mahomes.
Diehards Line:In his first full year as a starter, Mahomes was the only quarterback to throw for 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns, winning the NFL's most valuable player honors while leading the Chiefs deep into the postseason. The Cardinals believe they have the same type of quarterback in Murray, especially when comparing arm strength, release efficiency, accuracy and the ability to throw tight spirals from different angles. “You could compare it to that. It’s very unique, for sure,” said WR Christian Kirk, who spent a year with Murray at Texas A&M before the quarterback transferred to Oklahoma. But is his arm really as good as Mahomes’? “Yeah,” TE Ricky Seals-Jones said. “Kyler’s a different guy, man. He’s got it all. He can spin it.” David Johnson also doesn’t think comparing Murray and Mahomes is pushing the narrative too far. “I think you can say that, yeah. That’s a good comparison,” Johnson said. “It’s high praise, but I think it’s a good comparison. Kyler’s got one heck of an arm, that’s for sure. ...” Murray has been showcasing that arm during the team's latest round of voluntary organized team activities. The guy who coached Mahomes and now coaches Murray would have the best insight on the matter. And Kliff Kingsbury wasn't bashful about making the comparison. “It’s just a quick, efficient release,” Kingsbury said regarding Murray’s throwing motion. “He can drop it down. Pat was the same way and is the same way. They can drop it down and not lose accuracy, not lose touch. They’re so used to throwing from different platforms, different angles in baseball and it just translates over to football for them.” Murray takes the comparisons to Mahomes, like Murray takes everything else, in stride. It’s a compliment, but it also pushes a high bar even higher for an undersized quarterback who truly could become the NFL’s next big thing in 2019.
