The Facts: The Jets took a step toward improving their quarterback position last month by selecting Darnold as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Darnold, 20, known as a gunslinger with some mechanics issues, enters New York with the weight of the world on his shoulders. But new head coach Todd Bowles believes in his rookie QB. Bowles said Friday that Darnold will have a chance to start this season.
Diehards Line:
Veteran Josh McCown is currently penciled in as the starter, but Darnold will play if he beats him out in training camp. As the Sporting News notes, that's a different tune than the one Cleveland is striking with No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield. The Browns have adamantly stated and restated that Tyrod Taylor will be the starting quarterback to open the season. The Jets have McCown, Teddy Bridgewater and Darnold all fighting for the starting spot, with Bridgewater's roster spot in jeopardy should he finish third in that battle.
