The Facts: At the time Pat Shurmur was introduced as Giants HC on Friday afternoon, he had only spoken with one player: Starting QB Eli Manning. But Shurmur didn't take the weekend off. In addition to hiring assistant coaches, he had his first conversation with the Giants' most talented player, Beckham. "I've already spoken to him," Shurmur told ESPN's Golic and Wingo show on Monday morning. "Obviously we can talk about, 'Hey, how's it going? Nice to meet you" stuff. But, in talking to him, he sounds inspired to get ready to have a really good year, so I'm looking forward to that."
Diehards Line:
Shurmur indicated to the public that he will not coddle Beckham as predecessor Ben McAdoo did. Even the iron-fisted Tom Coughlin gave Beckham a longer leash than expected. Giants co-owner John Mara said he wanted Shurmur and Beckham to get to know each other before he could answer questions on a long-term contract extension for the star wide receiver. Beckham is a free agent after the 2018 season and wants to be the NFL's highest-paid player. "I think it's very, very important that we do what's right," Shurmur said on ESPN. "I think it comes down to doing what's right, competing, giving effort and playing the game with respect." Effort and competing have never been a problem for the extremely productive Beckham, who has run in trouble more with embarrassing touchdown celebrations and an inability to control his emotions on the sidelines. We'll see how Shurmur's approach to that aspect of Beckham plays out in coming weeks.
