The Facts: According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, HC Mike McCarthy is high on "the full threat" Montgomery, now 224 pounds, brings to the offense. "I think he gives you another dimension," McCarthy said. "We're always looking for matchups, and Ty definitely is a challenge in the area of matchups."
Diehards Line:
Indeed, if you believe McCarthy, he wants to run the ball this year and the first full-pads practice of camp offered some insight into where things stand in that regard, especially since McCarthy didn’t waste much time in the non-padded practices with meaningless running plays. Montgomery, as expected, received the starter’s reps, but there was plenty of work to go around for the trio of draft picks -- Jamaal Williams (fourth round), Aaron Jones (fifth round) and Devante Mays (seventh round). Williams looks like the most NFL-ready of the three; he handled the blitz pickup drill with relative ease and showed good power as a runner. But Montgomery looks like the focal point of the run game.
