The Facts: Griffin left last season believing he could be the Browns' quarterback of the future, but all he's guaranteed right now is the present. Browns head of football operations Sashi Brown admitted Wednesday that the team hasn't decided yet if Griffin will be on the team in 2017. "We haven't made a decision one way or the other whether or not he's going to be on our roster moving forward,' said Brown. "But he is on our roster today.'
Diehards Line:
Brown said he expects Griffin "will be back here come April when the guys come back' for the off-season program. He indicated that Griffin's $750,000 roster bonus due March 11 won't be a huge factor in the decision-making process. If the Browns haven't upgraded the position by then, they'll likely pay the bonus and go from there. As Plain Dealer staffer Mary Kay Cabot suggests, it's a reasonable enough sum that it wouldn't prevent them from releasing Griffin in the event they find another QB. The reality with Griffin is that if the Browns draft a quarterback and sign another veteran, he'll likely be gone. But they can't take the chance of striking out on the available veterans and having no one left on the roster. If they land a Jimmy Garoppolo, Tyrod Taylor, A.J. McCarron or Mike Glennon, Griffin will likely be cut. Brown was asked if he could imagine going into 2017 with the three quarterbacks currently on the roster, and he said "yes." They are Griffin, Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan. We shall see.
