The Facts: Wheaton, who finished the 2015 season with 44 catches and five touchdowns, believes he and Ben Roethlisberger laid the groundwork for a stronger relationship last season that will pay dividends this coming season. "We got on the same page as the season went on," said Wheaton, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract. "We learned how to communicate with each other, more so me communicating with him and giving him what he wants. I'm learning how to just be who I need to be when it comes to what Ben wants me to be."
Diehards Line:
In the first 39 games of Wheaton’s NFL career, he scored three touchdowns. Late last season, he was on pace for one touchdown per season, a below-average output for a former third-round draft choice who was hoping to become Antonio Brown’s top sidekick. Then, Wheaton eclipsed that total with a torrid finish to the 2015 season, scoring four touchdowns over the final six games. In a Week 11 game in Seattle, Wheaton had nine receptions for a career-high 201 yards. The Steelers are hoping Wheaton has more such performances this season in light of Martavis Bryant’s year-long drug suspension. The big question with Wheaton is whether he can produce when Bryant is not in the lineup. We'll be looking for signs of that when training camp opens.
