The Facts: The Texans don't plan to throw Savage, their fourth-round draft pick, into the fire quickly. However, as he was the only quarterback at Day 1 of rookie minicamp, he got first crack at running the team's new offense. "He went out there (Friday) and had a decent start to what hopefully is a long career for him," HC Bill O'Brien said.
Diehards Line:
O'Brien made a point to tell reporters his offensive system is "not the easiest to learn" for a rookie quarterback. "We throw so many things at the quarterback when he comes in here, whether it's knowledge of defense -- even in the first night, we spend an hour and a half with the guy in individual meetings, and then expect him to go out there and execute at a high level," O'Brien said, per the Houston Chronicle. "It's hard to do. But that's our expectation level here for that position. ..." With Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum and T.J. Yates all ahead of him on the initial depth chart, Savage's chances of earning some starts this season could be worse. But nobody should be banking on any of the Texans' QBs any time soon.
