Green Experiment Ends In Pittsburgh; Steelers Release TE
The Steelers ended their most recent attempt to add an athletic, seam-splitting threat to their offense on Thursday by releasing Ladarius Green.

The move, which will clear just over $2.6 million in cap room, came with the failed physical designation, which as Profootballtalk.com's Josh Alper suggested, "isn’t a great surprise given how Green’s one season with the team played out."

Green signed with the Steelers as an unrestricted free agent last offseason.

He had ankle surgery last March and did not play his first game with the Steelers until Week 10 of the regular season. He then suffered a concussion in Week 15 and missed the rest of the year. That concussion came after concerns were raised during the offseason about how long it took Green to recover from a previous head injury.

He ultimately played in six games in 2016, starting two of them. He had 18 receptions for 304 yards and a touchdown. His best game with the Steelers was against the Giants in Week 13, when he had six receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown.

In his five NFL seasons, the first four with the San Diego Chargers, Green has 95 receptions for 1,391 yards and 60 touchdowns.

In addition to paying Green $1 million a game, the Steelers also lost a sixth-round draft pick in the deal. The Steelers would have had a sixth-round compensatory pick this year if they hadn’t signed Green last year.

Meanwhile, as PFT suggested, if he’s healthy, Green will likely get a look from someone else before the start of the season but he’s not going to land the same kind of deal he got from the Steelers last year.

As for the Steelers, Jesse James, Xavier Grimble and David Johnson are the next men up.

As ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler notes, James doesn't have spectacular speed but he's growing in the offense, as evidenced by his 10 catches for 131 yards in the team's past two playoff games.

In addition, Fowler believes Grimble's role will become more important.

Grimble caught 11 passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns but was hampered by a rib injury late in the year. Grimble is still learning on the job. He has a build like a power forward and is an eager blocker.

Johnson trusted run-blocker should be heavily involved as the Steelers offense turns to Le'Veon Bell.
