It's Official: Saints Release Marques Colston
In a move that should come as no surprise to any of us, the Saints have released wide receiver Marques Colston. According to the league's transaction wire the Saints released the 32-year-old receiver, due to a failed physical.

It's not clear how great the fantasy football impact will be, however.

The club's all-time leading receiver and touchdown scorer, the 32-year old Colston has had a remarkable 10-year career since being drafted in the seventh round out of Hofstra in 2006, compiling 9,759 yards and a Super Bowl ring.

Colston caught Drew Brees’ first touchdown pass as a Saint in 2006. He went on to catch 72 of them, which ranks Brees and Colston fifth in NFL history among QB/pass-catcher duos.

But Colston essentially became New Orleans’ No. 3 receiver behind Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead last year while missing three games with injuries.

The Saints believe they have the "heir apparent" to Colston in Brandon Coleman, making it easier to jettison one of the most important player s in franchise history.

As ESPN.com's Mike Triplett recently noted, Coleman has been compared to Colston ever since he arrived as an undrafted receiver out of Rutgers in 2014 – both because of their humble beginnings and their impressive size (Colston is 6-4, 225 pounds; Coleman is 6-6, 225). Coleman stands tall as the best big-bodied red-zone option for an offense that also parted ways with go-to tight end Jimmy Graham last year.

But as Triplett stressed during an appearance with the FootballDiehards on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio on Saturday, that doesn’t guarantee anything for Coleman. Big things were also expected from him last year and he got passed over in the pecking order by the unheralded, 5-11 Snead, who came out of nowhere to establish himself as the team's No. 2 receiver -- a role that seems like to remain his this season.

Coleman finished with 30 catches, 454 yards and two touchdowns.

Still, with a greater opportunity and the team's tight end position in flux (Ben Watson is an unrestricted free agent), Coleman will be a player to watch in coming months. ...

Meanwhile, as Profootballtalk.com notes, Colston turns 33 in June, and presumably still has gas in the tank. The question is whether he wants to continue his career with a new team or retire from the game. He’s currently 44th on the all-time reception list, 49th on the receiving yardage list, and tied for 36th on the receiving touchdown list.
