The powerhouse running back -- long a front-line fantasy football standout -- made the announcement in typical Lynch style with a post on Twitter featuring a peace emoji with a picture of his cleats suspended from a telephone wire, suggesting he's hanging them up for good.
Seahawks teammate. Richard Sherman followed up with a tweet of his own, writing, "Salute to my guy @MoneyLynch ... It was an honor sharing the field with you." Russell Wilson posted a similar tweet which owner Paul Allen retweeted.
The team's official Twitter account later retweeted Lynch's tweet and added "#ThankYouBeastMode".
As NFL.com pointed out, the news comes as no surprise, although the timing -- in the middle of the fourth quarter of the Broncos' Super Bowl 50 win over Carolina -- might have been.
Embroiled in contract squabbles, he has weighed retirement in each of the past two offseasons.
Seahawks general manager John Schneider acknowledged two weeks ago that Lynch was leaning toward calling it a career at age 29 after a disappointing, injury-ravaged season in which he was outplayed by impressive rookie Thomas Rawls.
Lynch technically owes the Seahawks $2.5 million if he retires — unless the Seahawks agreed last year when signing him to a new deal or since then that he gets to keep the money if he walks away after one season.
If truly done -- and it certainly appears he is, Lynch finishes at No. 36 on the all-time rushing list, with 9,112 career yards.
