The veteran tight end sounds like he's finally found that last five percent as he puts the ultimate touches on his 17th season.
"I could keep playing," Gonzalez said Thursday, via the Sacramento Bee. "I know I could. But it's over."
As NFL.com's Dan Hanzus suggests, Gonzalez is not wrong about that first part. Gonzalez remains a productive and durable asset as he nears his 38th birthday. He still averages 10 yards per reception and is on pace for more than 80 catches and 900 yards this season. His seven touchdown catches illustrate how dangerous he remains in the red zone.
Gonzalez acknowledged he would've considered continuing his career if there was an NFL team in Los Angeles, where he lives with his family. That's not an option, so Gonzalez will say goodbye. Probably.
But first he'll play two more games -- and doing so with a lingering toe injury. Don't expect the injury to slow him any more than it has the last month.
