Harvin Will Have Surgery; Out 3-4 Months; Rice Nicked Too
Percy Harvin announced on Twitter that he will have surgery to repair his injury hip. "when everything is goin good sometimes life throw u a curve ball... sorry to half to report that my injury will require surgery," the star wideout wrote after getting a second opinion on the injury Tuesday in New York.

Harvin added: "Nobody was more anxious and excited about season then....but I will be back strong as ever..i appreciate all the love and prayers..."

Well, fantasy owners who already drafted Harvin might have been as anxious and excited, but that's a moot point.

Profootballtalk.com's Mike Florio reports the surgery will take place on Thursday.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, citing a source who has spoken with the wideout, reported that the estimated time table for Harvin's surgery and recovery is 3-4 months. That would put Harvin on track for a possible return in November at the earliest.

Florio is reporting that, in fact, is the plan.

Since Harvin is on the physically unable to perform list, the Seahawks likely will shift him to the reserve/PUP list before the start of the regular season. He’ll then have to be activated for practice purposes between Week 6 and Week 9. Once he begins to practice, the Seahawks will have three weeks to shift him to the active roster or shut him down for the season.

If was initially reported last week that Harvin has a possible slight tear in the labrum of his hip. Harvin got the second opinion because team doctors suggested that he receive treatment and play. Dr. Bryan Kelly obviously recommended that the labrum be repaired with surgery.

As NFL.com's Dan Hanzus reminded readers, the Seahawks knew they was taking on durability risks by trading for Harvin, but his ability as a playmaker won out in the end. And it still might be a great investment. But neither the Seahawks nor fantasy owners will get an immediate dividend.

Adding to the intrigue, Sidney Rice underwent a procedure for a muscle in his knee in Switzerland. Head coach Pete Carroll announced the news on Tuesday but didn't have much detail to provide about the procedure, other than to say it wasn't serious.

"I'm not going to try to tell you what it is," Carroll said. "This is way beyond my pay scale."

Carroll said Rice will be gone for a couple of days but should return to practice when he's back. He shouldn't miss any preseason or regular season games. Carroll wouldn't call the procedure preventative, but he did say it's not surgery.

"He didn't get hurt," Carroll said. "We're just trying to help him because we have something going that we think will help him, and I can't tell you what it is because I'd make a mistake."

Rice practiced during training camp before flying to Switzerland, although he had limited reps during practices.

Now the Seahawks will be looking for others to pick up the slack -- even if Rice returns without difficulty.

Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse, Phil Bates, Chris Harper, Bryan Waters, Stephen Williams, Brett Swain and Arceto Clark are the other wideouts currently on the roster.

Tate and Baldwin, who led Seattle in receptions as a rookie two years ago, are obviously the most likely candidates to step up in Harvin's absence. But others will have to get the job done if Rice doesn't rebound as expected.

Stay tuned. It's a story I'll be following all month.
